introduction: subarachnoid hemorrhage is one of the cerebral strokes, which is diagnosed from other types by risk factors and type of treatment. published data have shown variations between age, gender and mortality rate in different area. this study aimed to determine demographic, environmental and clinical characteristics of subarachnoid hemorrhage patients who admitted at farabi hospital during 1992-2002. materials & methods : this retrospective- descriptive study was based on the available records of subarachnoid hemorrhage patients. variables including; age, sex, season of admission, clinical symptoms, blood glucose and cholesterol level, history of hypertension, smoking, diabetes mellitus and alcohol consumption were closely monitored and analyzed. results: subarachnoid hemorrhage diagnosed clinical profiles were studied in 240 patients (62.5% women and 37.5% men). the highest and lowest rates of diagnose age group were 50-59 and 80-89 respectively. 46.7% of subjects had history of hypertension, 5.5% was diabetic and 15.5% had history of smoking in their clinical profiles. the most common risk factor was hypertension and the most common clinical reported symptom was headache. subarachnoid hemorrhage was more frequent in spring and winter season conclusion: the results revealed that women were more susceptible to subarachnoid hemorrhage than men. the age of patients was lower than the other types of strokes. in conclusion major risk factors of strokes such as hypertension, smoking, diabetes and chronic headache could be closely monitored through the public health system.
